Steps to Registration/ membership 

To work in Australia, you will need to be registered with the appropriate body. in some cases, you may also need to register with the state government in the state you are intending to work.

Identify the following:

  • Who do I need to be registered with?

  • How do I apply for registration?

  • Where/ when can I apply for registration?

Accreditation of your qualifications and skills assessment

You will need to have your qualifcations accredited (ie. assessed) to determine if they meet Australian standards so you may register and work in Australia. In some cases, you may do this through the registration, in others it is performed by another body.

Answer the following:

  • Who can assess my qualifcations?

  • How do I apply for assessment?

  • Where/ when can I apply for assessment?

Competency Assessments

In some cases, you will be required to complete competency assessments either during registration or the accreditation process. Ensure you find out if you must require any further assessment.

Fees

​In most cases, both registration and accreditation of qualifcations (including any competency assessments required) you will need to pay fees. ​

Time Commitment

Registration and accreditation will take time to process from when you apply. You may also be requried to apply within certain time restraints or complete additional assessments at scheduled times. ​

English Language Requirments

In most cases, you will need to provide evidence of your English Language Proficiency. See the English Language Tests page for links to commonly used and certified testing agencies. Ensure you check with the registering body which tests are required as some only accept specific tests. ​

Documentation

You will need to provide documentation for both registration and accreditation. It is likely you will require some or all of the following:​

  • Proof of qualification complete, such as a testamur or certification of completion from the awarding academic institution.

  • Academic transcripts.

  • Course handbooks.

  • Proof of placements or required work to complete your qualifications.

  • Proof of registration in a foreign country if you have already been working professionally. 

  • Personal identification such as a Passport.

  • A CV/ Resume outlining your professional experience and qualifications gained. 

  • Reference letters from previous employers or registering bodies. 

  • VISA and working rights.

  • Proof of English Language Proficiency.
